Tips for Saving Gas, and Money, This Summer

2023-05-31

Gas GuageThe U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) says that by following certain guidelines, an average driver can improve their fuel economy by around 10 percent. That might not seem like a big difference, but over time – and as road-trip season approaches – it can have a big effect on your wallet.

Here are some gas-saving tips to try out this summer...

Slow down: It's difficult for those lead foots out there, but slowing down really does help the fuel efficiency in all vehicles. The DOE claims that after reaching 50 mph, fuel efficiency decreases rapidly: For every 5 mph over 50 mph, you can assume that you're paying an additional $0.18 per gallon.

Stop pushing: The petal to the metal, that is. Instead, accelerate at a moderate rate, or, better yet, anticipate what lies ahead to decrease braking and acceleration, therefore saving gas.

Lighten your load: It might look cool to keep your kayak on the roof of your car all summer, but it's not cool for your gas mileage. Remove unnecessary weight from inside your vehicle, and only use cargo racks on top when needed, as large roof-top boxes can reduce fuel economy by up to 8% in urban settings and up to 25% on the interstates.

Avoid the Idle: It's tempting to keep the car running while your husband runs into the store, but this practice can use up to a half-gallon of fuel per hour. And when it comes to warming up your car in the winter, the DOE says the average vehicle needs no more than 30 seconds to warm up idling, adding that the best way to warm up a car is to drive.

Try a gas app: The GasBuddy app checks gas prices in your area and notifies users about where to find the best deals. In addition to directions, Google Maps offers gas prices along your chosen route.

Drive less: It seems obvious, but the best way to save money on gas is to drive less. Ways to do this include combining errands, planning your routes, walking, using free public transportation, and carpooling whenever possible.
