Lost Hardware Detectives: Track Down Your Missing Device with Cutting-Edge Apps

2013-09-06

Part of what makes our iPhones, Androids, and the like so convenient is their diminutive size. They fit easily into pockets and purses and are extremely portable. The undesirable flip side to their petite stature, however, is how easily they can be left behind and lost, not to mention stolen. Before notifying your insurance company about a lost or stolen device, however, you can try tracking it down.

A few ingenious apps can function like detectives or private eyes, keeping tabs on your device and pinpointing its exact locale when it's out of your hands, even photographing the person who's hands it is in! Has your Android been coming home with lipstick on its collar? Want to know what your iPhone's up to when it thinks you aren't looking? Who needs Philip Marlowe when you can install a simple app?

Phone security and tracking apps & services include:

  • Find My Phone - This is a free app for all Apple devices. It is not activated by default; so if you have an Apple gadget, take a moment to activate it now. This app will enable you to locate your lost or stolen device, remotely wipe all data, and remotely lock your device.
  • Prey Project - This high-tech service is free for up to three devices, and comes with a monthly fee for more devices. It works with Windows, Mac, IOS, and Android products. It functions to: take a photo of your device's thief; take screenshots of the thief's activity; enable you to remotely lock your device, conduct a hardware scan, or display a "stolen" message on its screen; inform you of the device's location.
  • Avast Security Suite - This is free for Android. Its features include remote locking, messaging, locations disclosure, call forwarding, malware protection, and remote wipe.
  • Android Lost - Also free, this functions much the same as the Avast Security Suite, but does not come with malware protection.

Try downloading one of the free tracking apps today, and test it out. For more information about security and tracking systems for your phone, iPad, or other device that come with a monthly fee, talk to your service plan provider, and weigh your options carefully. Depending on just what you use your device for, it may be more prudent to pay for insurance that will simply replace your gadget if it lost or stolen than to pay for a costly tracking service.
